Math fact fluency is one of the most important foundations for success in math. This timer is designed for a simple, daily routine: students practice their basic math facts (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction) for 5 minutes at the start of every math block. The goal is speed and accuracy — building the kind of automatic recall that frees students up to tackle more complex math.
Each student gets a printed math fact sheet (100 problems for one operation). The timer runs through 5 phases:
Students work through as many problems as they can. If they finish all 100 before time is up, they look at the timer and record the time remaining on their sheet.
Students check their answers against an answer key (or swap sheets with a neighbor) and correct any mistakes.
Students pair up and quiz each other on facts they missed or found tricky. Partner 1 quizzes for the first half, then they switch.
A bonus math problem appears on screen — a quick mental math challenge, fraction comparison, rounding problem, or other skill review. Great for whole-class discussion.
Students record their score and reflect on their progress. Did they beat their previous time? What facts do they still need to work on?
All students start with multiplication — the most critical operation for 5th grade math. To "master" an operation, a student must complete all 100 problems correctly within the mastery time (about 3 seconds per problem):
Once a student masters one operation, they move on to the next. The timer's thermometer includes a mastery marker so students can see the target time visually as the timer counts down.
This works great at home too! Print a sheet for the operation your child is working on, open this timer on any screen (phone, tablet, laptop), and press Start. Even just 5 minutes a day builds real fluency over time. Use the partner practice phase to quiz each other — kids love it when they get to be the "teacher."
Print these out and you'll have everything you need. Each sheet has 100 problems covering all facts 0–9.
