The Suffix -able
The suffix -able means "capable of being" or "able to be." When added to a base word, it creates an adjective. For example, afford + -able = affordable (able to be afforded). Spelling tip: If the base word ends in a silent e, drop the e before adding -able (excite → excitable, note → notable).
afford → affordable, depend → dependable, laugh → laughable, question → questionable, accept → acceptable, enjoy → enjoyable
When the base word does NOT end in a silent e, simply add -able directly to the end.
excite → excitable, reuse → reusable, note → notable
When the base word ends in a silent e, drop the e before adding -able.
Watch Out — Tricky Patterns!
Not every word this week ends in -able! Words 11–20 are important vocabulary words without the suffix. Watch out for these common mistakes:
excite → excitable ✓ (drop e) | note → notable ✓ (drop e) | BUT: notice → noticeable ⭐ (KEEP the e!)
Keep the e after c or g to preserve the soft sound (noticeable, courageous)
Hawaii and Florida are proper nouns — always capitalize them!
hurry, request, secret, indeed, cathedral, culture, specific — these are important vocabulary words without the -able suffix
