Morpheme Masters Championship
Day 4: The Gauntlet & Team Championship
- Independently chunk unfamiliar multisyllabic words using the Scoop & Blend routine (SCOOP โ SAY โ BLEND โ FLEX)
- Break morphologically complex words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes to predict meaning
- Apply the Morpheme Word-Attack Routine (FIND โ DEFINE โ COMBINE โ CHECK) to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
- Explain in writing how morpheme parts build a word's total meaning
The smallest unit of meaning in a word. A morpheme can be a prefix, root, or suffix.
A single unit of pronunciation with one vowel sound. We "scoop" words into syllables to say them.
A prefix is a morpheme added to the BEGINNING of a root to change its meaning (un-, re-, dis-, pre-, mis-).
The core root is the main morpheme that carries the base meaning of a word (struct, rupt, port, dict, etc.).
Four days ago, you were guessing words from the first letter.
Today, you prove you're Word Warriors. You have TWO superpowers now โ and today you show them off.
SCOOP โ SAY โ BLEND โ FLEX
Helps you SAY the word
FIND โ DEFINE โ COMBINE โ CHECK
Helps you UNDERSTAND the word
Individual Chunking Challenge
15 words you've NEVER seen before. Just you, your pencil, and Scoop & Blend. How many can you crack?
Team Competition โ 4 Stations
Build words, break words, read words, explain words. Every morpheme you've learned this week is fair game!
The 4-Step Routine
Draw arcs under
each chunk
Say each chunk
out loud
Slide the chunks
together
Adjust vowels
until it sounds right
Our Anchor Word: PRO • ME • THE • US
Remember when this word stumped us on Day 1? Now it's automatic!
Everyone say it together:
PROMETHEUS
๐ That's how far you've come! Day 1 you couldn't say it. Now it rolls off your tongue.
โ๏ธ The Gauntlet Begins
This is YOUR personal challenge โ no partners, no help.
You'll see 15 words you've never practiced before. Your job: scoop each word and write your best pronunciation.
Get your pencil ready. This is NOT a test โ it's a personal best challenge. How many can you crack?
Instructions
- Look at each word on the next slide.
- Scoop โ draw arcs under each syllable chunk on your paper.
- Write your best pronunciation next to each word.
- Flex โ adjust vowel sounds if your first try doesn't sound like a real word.
This is a PERSONAL BEST challenge. No talking. No peeking. Just you and the words.

14. Dostoyevsky
Dos ยท toy ยท EV ยท skee โ 4 chunks. A famous Russian author!
15. xylophone
ZY ยท loh ยท fone โ 3 chunks. That "x" makes a "z" sound โ classic FLEX move!
Which word was the HARDEST for you, and why?
Which step of Scoop & Blend saved you the most โ SCOOP, SAY, BLEND, or FLEX?
Sentence starter: "The hardest word for me was ___ because ___. The step that helped me most was ___."
Close enough counts! If you got the syllables right, you're doing the strategy correctly โ even if your vowels weren't perfect.
Remember Day 1?
You stared at this word and had NO idea where to start:
PROMETHEUS
Then you learned to scoop it: PRO • ME • THE • US
And today you just scooped 15 words you'd never seen before. THAT is growth.
You proved you can SAY any word using Scoop & Blend.
Now prove you can UNDERSTAND any word using morphemes.
Remember the connection:
Chunking helps you SAY the word. Morphemes help you UNDERSTAND the word.
IT'S CHAMPIONSHIP TIME!
Every prefix, root, and suffix you've learned this week is fair game.
4 stations. 7 minutes each. Team points at every station.
May the best Morpheme Masters win!
Team Setup (2 minutes)
- Find your team (assigned by Teacher Zach).
- Pick a team name โ something powerful!
- Huddle โ quick review: look at the Word Wall together and quiz each other on morphemes.
- Grab your team answer sheet from Teacher Zach.
โฑ๏ธ You have 2 minutes to form up and review. Then we rotate through 4 stations!
Morpheme Word-Attack Routine
Find the prefix,
root, & suffix
Define each
part's meaning
Put the meanings
together
Does it make sense
in context?
Use this at EVERY station. It works for building words, breaking words, AND explaining words.
Given a definition โ build the word from morpheme parts
Given a complex word โ break it into morphemes & predict meaning
Fill in blanks in a passage using a word bank + justify each choice
Write a clear explanation of how morpheme parts build a word's meaning
โฑ๏ธ 7 minutes per station. Teacher Zach will call time and you rotate!
Instructions
- Read each definition carefully.
- Think โ which prefix, root, and suffix pieces match that meaning?
- Build the word by combining the morpheme parts.
- Write the complete word AND label each part.
Definition: "The act of building again"
Answer: re- (again) + struct (build) + -ion (act of) = reconstruction
1. "A person who writes things down"
scrib + -er = scriber (or de + scrib + -er = describer)
2. "The act of carrying something across"
trans- + port + -ation = transportation
3. "Not able to be seen"
in- + vis + -ible = invisible
4. "The act of saying against"
contra + dict + -ion = contradiction
5. "To build wrongly or badly"
mis- + con + struct = misconstruct
6. "The state of being pulled apart or not focused"
dis- + tract + -ion = distraction
7. "One who throws things out (of a movie theater, for example)"
e- + ject + -or = ejector
8. "Not able to be believed"
in- + cred + -ible = incredible
Instructions
- Read the word carefully.
- FIND โ identify the prefix, root(s), and suffix(es).
- DEFINE โ write what each part means.
- COMBINE โ put the meanings together to predict the word's meaning.
- Write your breakdown AND your predicted meaning.
Word: reconstruction
Breakdown: re- (again) + con (together) + struct (build) + -ion (act of)
Predicted meaning: "The act of building something together again"
1. circumscription
circum- (around) + script (write) + -ion (act of) = "the act of writing/drawing around something; a boundary"
2. inaudible
in- (not) + aud (hear) + -ible (able to be) = "not able to be heard"
3. discreditable
dis- (not/apart) + cred (believe) + -it + -able (able to be) = "able to cause disbelief; shameful"
4. malfunctioning
mal- (bad/badly) + function + -ing (doing) = "working badly; not working right"
5. autobiography
auto- (self) + bio (life) + graph (write) + -y = "writing about your own life"
6. intervisible
inter- (between) + vis (see) + -ible (able to be) = "able to be seen between two places; able to see each other"
7. exportation
ex- (out of) + port (carry) + -ation (act of) = "the act of carrying something out (to another country)"
8. misconstruction
mis- (wrongly) + con (together) + struct (build) + -ion (act of) = "wrongly building meaning; misunderstanding"
9. indescribable
in- (not) + de- (down) + scrib (write) + -able (able to be) = "not able to be written down; beyond words"

Instructions
- Read the passage on the next slide. Notice the blank spaces.
- Look at the Word Bank โ each word is morphologically complex.
- Use your morpheme knowledge to choose the RIGHT word for each blank.
- Write the word AND a brief justification: which morphemes helped you choose?
You get MORE points for strong justifications! Don't just guess โ explain your thinking.
destruction
invisible
prediction
transportation
incredible
misconduct
audible
descriptive
Tip: Look for morpheme clues in each word AND in the passage context!
The volcano's eruption caused massive __________(1) across the island. Buildings crumbled and roads split apart. Scientists had made a __________(2) days earlier that the eruption would happen, but many people didn't believe them.
The ash cloud was so thick it made the sun almost __________(3) โ you couldn't see it at all. The roar of the explosion was __________(4) from fifty miles away.
Rescue teams used helicopters for __________(5) because the roads were destroyed โ they had to carry supplies through the air. Reporters wrote __________(6) articles that painted a vivid picture of the scene.
The survivors said the experience was __________(7) โ so amazing and terrifying they could hardly believe it. Later, some officials were charged with __________(8) for ignoring the warning signs.
1. destruction
de- (down/apart) + struct (build) + -ion โ "tearing apart buildings"
2. prediction
pre- (before) + dict (say) + -ion โ "said it before it happened"
3. invisible
in- (not) + vis (see) + -ible โ "not able to be seen"
4. audible

5. transportation
trans- (across) + port (carry) + -ation โ "carrying across"
6. descriptive
de- (down) + script (write) + -ive โ "having the quality of writing it down vividly"
7. incredible
in- (not) + cred (believe) + -ible โ "not able to be believed"
8. misconduct
mis- (wrongly) + conduct โ "wrong behavior"
Instructions
- Read each word.
- Break it into morpheme parts.
- Write a CLEAR explanation of how each part builds the total meaning.
- Be specific โ name each prefix, root, and suffix and say what it means.
Word: indestructible
in- means "not," de- means "down/apart," struct means "build," and -ible means "able to be." So indestructible means "not able to be taken apart" โ something that can't be destroyed.
1. indestructible
in- + de- + struct + -ible
2. prediction
pre- + dict + -ion
3. misconduct
mis- + conduct
4. invisible
in- + vis + -ible
5. transportation
trans- + port + -ation
Points for CLARITY and COMPLETENESS. Name every part and explain the whole meaning!
Pre- means "before" and dict means "say." The suffix -ion means "the act of." So a prediction is "the act of saying something before it happens" โ when you guess what will happen next.
Mis- means "wrongly" or "badly." Conduct means behavior or how you act. So misconduct means "wrong behavior" โ when someone does something they shouldn't.
Trans- means "across," port means "carry," and -ation means "the act of." So transportation means "the act of carrying something across" โ like moving people or supplies from one place to another.
Scoring Guide
1 pt per correct word
+1 bonus for 3+ morphemes
1 pt per breakdown
+1 pt per good meaning
1 pt per correct word
+1 pt per justification
1โ3 pts per explanation
(clarity + completeness)
โฑ๏ธ Teams: tally your points on the answer sheet. Teacher Zach will verify!
Congratulations, Morpheme Masters!
Every team showed incredible morpheme detective skills today.
Shout out individuals who showed great "detective thinking" โ even if their team didn't win!
The REAL win? Four days ago you were guessing words from the first letter. Now look what you can do.
Exit Ticket โ Just You
The team competition was fun, but Teacher Zach needs to see what YOU know individually.
5 quick questions. Both superpowers. Show what you've learned this week.
No talking. Write your name on your paper. You've got this!
Chunk this word into syllables and write the pronunciation:
Archimedes
Ar ยท chi ยท ME ยท deez (4 syllables)
Break this word into morphemes:
indescribable
in- (not) + de- (down) + scrib (write) + -able (able to be)
Use the morpheme parts to predict the meaning of this word:
malcontent
mal- (bad) + content (satisfied) = "badly satisfied; someone who is unhappy or dissatisfied"
The explorer wrote a ___ of her journey across the desert.
A) disruption B) description C) distraction D) construction
B) description โ de- (down) + script (write) + -ion = "the act of writing something down"
How does adding the prefix "mis-" to "conduct" change the word's meaning?
Write 2โ3 sentences explaining:
- What does "conduct" mean by itself?
- What does "mis-" mean?
- How does the new word "misconduct" mean something different?
"Conduct" means behavior โ how someone acts. The prefix "mis-" means "wrongly" or "badly." When you add "mis-" to "conduct," you get "misconduct," which means wrong or bad behavior โ like when someone breaks the rules on purpose.
When you're done, turn your exit ticket face-down on your desk.
In the bottom of your notebook page, write one sentence explaining: "What are the TWO strategies I can use every time I see a word I don't know?"

-er/-or (one who)
-ous/-ious (full of)
-ful (full of)
-less (without)
inter- (between)
trans- (across)
sub- (under)
super- (above)
ex- (out of)

graph/gram (write)
phon (sound)
bio (life)
auto (self)
tele (far)

mal (bad)
terra (earth)
-ly (in manner of)
-ness (state of)
-ist (one who)
-ology (study of)
-ive (having quality of)
