What is a Syllable? 🤔

A syllable is a word part that has ONE vowel sound

👋 👂
✋ Put your hand under your chin and say: "bas-ket-ball"

How many times does your chin drop? 3 times!

Basketball = 3 syllables = 3 vowel sounds

Let's Practice! 🎯

Put your hand under your chin. Say these words together!
Pattern 1: VCCV
Vowel - Consonant - Consonant - Vowel
→ Divide BETWEEN the two consonants (VC/CV)

Example: napkin

n a p k i n

nap / kin

When you see two consonants between two vowels, split BETWEEN them!

VCCV Pattern Examples

but/ter
pen/cil
bas/ket
hap/pen
kit/ten
rab/bit
Pattern 2: VCV
Vowel - Consonant - Vowel
→ Divide AFTER the first vowel (V/CV)

Example: robot

r o b o t

ro / bot

When you see ONE consonant between two vowels, try splitting AFTER the first vowel!

The first vowel usually says its NAME (long sound)

VCV Pattern Examples

ti/ger
mu/sic
pa/per
o/pen
ba/by
pi/lot
Pattern 3: Consonant + le
When a word ends in consonant + "le"
→ Those 3 letters make their own syllable!

Example: table

t a b l e → Find the -ble at the end

ta / ble

Look for consonant + "le" at the end of words!

Consonant + le Examples

pur/ple
ap/ple
sim/ple
can/dle
bot/tle
gen/tle

🎯 Strategy for LONG Words 🎯

Long words use MORE THAN ONE pattern!

The Steps:

  1. Mark ALL the vowels
  2. Start with the first TWO vowels
  3. Apply the pattern for those vowels
  4. Move to the NEXT pair of vowels
  5. Keep going until you reach the end!
  6. Check for C+le at the end

Let's practice together!

Step-by-Step: uncomfortable

Step 1: Mark the vowels

uncomfortable

Step 2: Between u and o → nc (VCCV)

un / comfortable

Step 3: Between o and o → mf (VCCV)

un / com / fortable

Step 4: Between o and a → rt (VCCV)

un / com / for / table

Step 5: End with -ble (C+le)

un / com / for / ta / ble
