What is a Root?
A root is a word part that carries meaning but CANNOT stand alone.
Key Difference:

Why learn roots?
- One root appears in MANY words (word families)
- Roots help you DECODE and UNDERSTAND words
- Most roots come from Latin or Greek languages
The Strategy
When you see a word with a root:
- Look for prefixes and suffixes FIRST
- The middle part might be a ROOT (not a base word!)
- Use the root meaning to help you understand the word
