๐Ÿ”‘ Key Strategy

Place value is everything!

โš ๏ธCommon Mistake Alert!

Students often think 0.15 > 0.8 because "15 is bigger than 8"

But that's wrong! We can't just compare the digits โ€” we need to look at place value.

๐Ÿ’กThe Golden Rule

Always compare digits in the same place value position!

  • Start at the left (biggest place value)
  • Compare digit by digit, moving right
  • The first difference tells you which is greater

๐Ÿ“ Strategy 1: Line Up the Decimals

Compare 0.7 and 0.52

Ones.TenthsHundredths
0.70
0.52

The tenths place is different: 7 > 5

So 0.7 > 0.52 โœ“

โœจPro Tip

Add zeros to make the decimals the same length: 0.7 = 0.70

Now it's easy to see: 0.70 vs 0.52 โ€” which is bigger?

๐Ÿ’ฐ Strategy 2: Think Money!

Which is greater: 0.25 or 0.3?

๐Ÿช™0.25 = 25ยข
vs
๐Ÿช™๐Ÿช™๐Ÿช™0.3 = 30ยข

30ยข > 25ยข, so 0.3 > 0.25 โœ“

๐Ÿง Remember

0.3 is the same as $0.30 (thirty cents)

0.03 is the same as $0.03 (three cents)

Big difference! 30ยข โ‰  3ยข

๐Ÿ”„ Strategy 3: Equivalent Decimals

โš–๏ธTrailing Zeros Don't Change Value!

0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500

Adding zeros after the last digit doesn't change the value

โš ๏ธBut Be Careful!

Leading zeros DO change the value:

0.5 โ‰  0.05 โ‰  0.005

50ยข โ‰  5ยข โ‰  half a penny!

๐Ÿ“ Strategy 4: Number Line

Where do decimals fall on a number line?

0
0.25
0.5
0.75
1
โ–ผ
0.3
โ–ผ
0.15

Numbers further RIGHT are GREATER

0.3 is to the right of 0.15, so 0.3 > 0.15

โœ๏ธ Problem 1

Compare the decimals

0.8 ? 0.35

Which symbol goes in the blank: >, <, or =?

โœ“Solution

Line up the decimals: 0.80 vs 0.35

Compare tenths: 8 tenths > 3 tenths

๐Ÿ’ฐ Money check: 80ยข vs 35ยข โ€” 80ยข is more!

Answer
0.8 > 0.35

โœ๏ธ Problem 2

Compare the decimals

0.09 ? 0.6
โœ“Solution

Line up the decimals: 0.09 vs 0.60

Compare tenths: 0 tenths < 6 tenths

๐Ÿ’ฐ Money check: 9ยข vs 60ยข โ€” 9ยข is way less!

โš ๏ธ Don't be tricked! 9 looks bigger than 6, but place value matters!

Answer
0.09 < 0.6

โœ๏ธ Problem 3

Compare the decimals

0.70 ? 0.7
โœ“Solution

These are equivalent decimals!

0.70 = 0.7 (the trailing zero doesn't change the value)

๐Ÿ’ฐ Money check: 70ยข = 70ยข โœ“

Answer
0.70 = 0.7

โœ๏ธ Problem 4

Compare the decimals

0.125 ? 0.2
โœ“Solution

Line up the decimals: 0.125 vs 0.200

Compare tenths: 1 tenth < 2 tenths

We already know! No need to look further.

โš ๏ธ Don't be tricked by "125 vs 2" โ€” place value matters!

Answer
0.125 < 0.2

๐Ÿค” Problem 5: Who Is Correct?

Think About This...
Marcus says that 0.19 is greater than 0.3 because 19 is greater than 3.

Do you agree with Marcus?
โœ“Solution

No, Marcus is incorrect!

Marcus made a common mistake โ€” he compared 19 to 3 without thinking about place value.

Let's line them up:

Ones.TenthsHundredths
0.19
0.30

The tenths place: 1 < 3, so 0.19 < 0.3

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think: 19ยข < 30ยข

Answer
0.19 < 0.3 (Marcus is wrong!)

๐Ÿค” Problem 6: Who Is Correct?

Think About This...
Sofia says that 0.50 and 0.5 and 0.500 are all equal.

Do you agree with Sofia?
โœ“Solution

Yes, Sofia is correct!

These are equivalent decimals.

Adding zeros after the last digit doesn't change the value:

0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think: 50ยข = 50ยข = 50ยข โœ“

All three represent five tenths or half of one.

Answer
Sofia is correct! โœ“

๐Ÿค” Problem 7: Who Is Correct?

Think About This...
Aiden says that 0.300 and 0.003 are equal because they both have the digits 3-0-0.

Do you agree with Aiden?
โœ“Solution

No, Aiden is incorrect!

The position of the digits matters, not just which digits they are!

Ones.TenthsHundredthsThousandths
0.300
0.003

0.300 = 3 tenths = 30ยข

0.003 = 3 thousandths = less than 1ยข

Answer
0.300 โ‰  0.003 (Aiden is wrong!)

โœ๏ธ Problem 8

Compare the decimals

0.45 ? 0.405
โœ“Solution

Line up the decimals: 0.450 vs 0.405

Compare tenths: 4 = 4 โœ“ (same)

Compare hundredths: 5 > 0

The hundredths place decides it!

Answer
0.45 > 0.405

โœ๏ธ Problem 9

Compare the decimals

0.062 ? 0.62
โœ“Solution

Line up the decimals: 0.062 vs 0.620

Compare tenths: 0 < 6

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think: about 6ยข vs 62ยข โ€” big difference!

โš ๏ธ That leading zero in 0.062 makes a huge difference!

Answer
0.062 < 0.62

โš–๏ธ Problem 10: True or False?

True or False?
0.8 > 0.75
TRUE
FALSE
โœ“Solution

TRUE!

0.8 = 0.80, which is greater than 0.75

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think: 80ยข > 75ยข โœ“

Answer
TRUE โœ“

โš–๏ธ Problem 11: True or False?

True or False?
0.099 > 0.1
TRUE
FALSE
โœ“Solution

FALSE!

Line up: 0.099 vs 0.100

Tenths: 0 < 1

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think: about 10ยข vs 10ยข... actually 9.9ยข < 10ยข

โš ๏ธ 99 looks bigger than 1, but place value rules!

Answer
FALSE โœ— (0.099 < 0.1)

โš–๏ธ Problem 12: True or False?

True or False?
0.40 = 0.04
TRUE
FALSE
โœ“Solution

FALSE!

0.40 = 4 tenths = 40ยข

0.04 = 4 hundredths = 4ยข

๐Ÿ’ฐ 40 cents is NOT equal to 4 cents!

The position of the 4 completely changes the value.

Answer
FALSE โœ— (0.40 โ‰  0.04)

๐Ÿ“Š Problem 13: Put in Order

Least to Greatest

Order these from LEAST to GREATEST
0.5    0.05    0.55
โœ“Solution

Line them up: 0.50, 0.05, 0.55

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think money: 50ยข, 5ยข, 55ยข

0.05 (5ยข) is the smallest

0.5 (50ยข) is in the middle

0.55 (55ยข) is the largest

Least to Greatest
0.05 < 0.5 < 0.55

๐Ÿ“Š Problem 14: Put in Order

Least to Greatest

Order these from LEAST to GREATEST
0.4    0.42    0.402    0.24
โœ“Solution

Line them up: 0.400, 0.420, 0.402, 0.240

Compare tenths first: 0.24 has 2 tenths (smallest!)

The other three all have 4 tenths โ€” compare hundredths:

โ€ข 0.400 โ†’ 0 hundredths

โ€ข 0.402 โ†’ 0 hundredths (but has 2 thousandths)

โ€ข 0.420 โ†’ 2 hundredths (largest!)

Least to Greatest
0.24 < 0.4 < 0.402 < 0.42

โœ๏ธ Problem 15

Compare the decimals

0.909 ? 0.91
โœ“Solution

Line them up: 0.909 vs 0.910

Tenths: 9 = 9 โœ“

Hundredths: 0 < 1

The hundredths place decides it!

Answer
0.909 < 0.91

๐Ÿค” Problem 16: Who Is Correct?

Think About This...
Mia says 0.72 is less than 0.6 because 72 "looks bigger" so it must be closer to 1.

Do you agree with Mia?
โœ“Solution

No, Mia is incorrect! (And her reasoning is backward!)

Let's check:

โ€ข 0.72 = 72 hundredths = 72ยข

โ€ข 0.6 = 60 hundredths = 60ยข

72ยข > 60ยข, so 0.72 > 0.6

Being "closer to 1" actually means the number is GREATER!

Answer
0.72 > 0.6 (Mia is wrong!)

โœ๏ธ Problem 17

Compare the decimals

0.250 ? 0.25
โœ“Solution

These are equivalent decimals!

The trailing zero in 0.250 doesn't change the value.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Both equal 25ยข (a quarter!)

Answer
0.250 = 0.25

๐Ÿ“Š Problem 18: Put in Order

Greatest to Least

Order these from GREATEST to LEAST
0.8    0.08    0.88    0.808
โœ“Solution

Line them up: 0.800, 0.080, 0.880, 0.808

๐Ÿ’ฐ Think money: 80ยข, 8ยข, 88ยข, about 81ยข

0.88 (88ยข) is the greatest

0.808 (about 81ยข) is second

0.8 (80ยข) is third

0.08 (8ยข) is the least

Greatest to Least
0.88 > 0.808 > 0.8 > 0.08

๐ŸŽ‰ Great Work!

Key Takeaways

โœ…DO This
  • Line up decimal points
  • Compare place by place (left to right)
  • Add zeros to make same length
  • Think about money!
โŒDON'T Do This
  • โœ— Compare digits without place value
  • โœ— Think "more digits = bigger"
  • โœ— Ignore where zeros are located
  • โœ— Compare 19 to 3 directly

๐Ÿง  Remember

Place value is EVERYTHING!
