๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary
๐Ÿ“Quotation Marks

The punctuation marks (" ") placed around the exact words someone says. In the sentence Mom said, "Dinner is ready," the quotation marks show her exact words.

When the coach yelled, "Run faster!" the quotation marks show exactly what he said.
The sign read, "No swimming allowed," with quotation marks around the exact words on the sign.
๐Ÿ“Direct Speech

The exact words that a person says, written inside quotation marks. "I love this book!" is direct speech because those are the speaker's exact words.

"Can we go to the park?" is direct speech because it captures exactly what the child said.
When you write what someone actually said word for word, like "See you tomorrow," that's direct speech.
๐Ÿ“Speaker Tag

The part of the sentence that tells who is speaking and how they said it, like said Mom or shouted the boy. It can go before or after the dialogue.

In "Let's go!" exclaimed Jake, the speaker tag is "exclaimed Jake" โ€” it tells us who spoke and how.
The speaker tag "whispered the girl" comes after the dialogue in: "I have a secret," whispered the girl.
๐Ÿ“Dialogue

A conversation between two or more people, or the spoken words written in a story. Writers use dialogue to bring characters to life.

The dialogue between the two friends made the story feel real and exciting.
When an author writes dialogue, they show what characters say to each other using quotation marks.
โ“ Why Do We Need Quotation Marks?
WITHOUT Quotation Marks

Maria said the pizza is amazing.

โš ๏ธ Confusing โ€” is Maria saying this or is the narrator describing pizza?

WITH Quotation Marks

Maria said, "The pizza is amazing."

โœ“ Clear โ€” we know exactly what Maria said

๐Ÿ’ก Quotation marks are like a spotlight โ€” they shine on the EXACT words someone speaks!

๐Ÿ““ The Big Rule
Write this in your notebook!
Key Word
Quotation Marks Rule
Notes
Quotation marks go around the speaker's EXACT words โ€” the words that come out of their mouth. Everything else (like "said Mom") stays OUTSIDE the quotation marks.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Rule #1 โ€” Speaker Tag FIRST

When the speaker tag comes FIRST, follow this pattern:

Speaker tag + comma + opening quote + first word capitalized + dialogue + end punctuation INSIDE quotes + closing quote

Example:

The teacher said, "Please open your books."

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Rule #1 โ€” More Examples

Dad said, "We are going to the store."

She whispered, "Don't tell anyone."

The principal announced, "There will be no school on Friday!"

๐Ÿ”‘ The comma ALWAYS goes right after the speaker tag, BEFORE the opening quotation mark.

โœ… Quick Check

Which sentence uses quotation marks correctly?

A) Mom said "go clean your room."

B) Mom said, "Go clean your room."

B is correct! The speaker tag has a comma, capital G, and period inside the quotation marks.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Rule #2 โ€” Speaker Tag LAST

When the speaker tag comes LAST:

Opening quote + first word capitalized + dialogue + comma/? or ! INSIDE quotes + closing quote + speaker tag + period

Example:

"I can't wait for recess," said Marcus.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Rule #2 โ€” End Punctuation Matters

Three examples showing different end marks:

๐Ÿ“‹ Statement

"The movie was awesome," said Lily.

Comma replaces the period

โ“ Question

"Where are my shoes?" asked Dad.

Question mark stays โ€” no comma needed

โ— Exclamation

"Watch out!" screamed the lifeguard.

Exclamation mark stays โ€” no comma

๐Ÿ”‘ When the speaker tag comes LAST โ€” commas, question marks, and exclamation points ALL go INSIDE the closing quotation mark. Only statements swap the period for a comma.

๐Ÿ““ Two Patterns

Tag LAST
Notes
Tag FIRST โ†’ speaker tag + comma + "Dialogue."

Remember: End punctuation ALWAYS goes INSIDE the closing quotation mark!
