Quotation Marks
Punctuating Direct Speech
- Place quotation marks around direct speech in a sentence
- Use correct punctuation (commas, periods, question marks, exclamation points) with quotation marks
- Write sentences with dialogue using proper quotation mark conventions
The punctuation marks (" ") placed around the exact words someone says. In the sentence Mom said, "Dinner is ready," the quotation marks show her exact words.
The exact words that a person says, written inside quotation marks. "I love this book!" is direct speech because those are the speaker's exact words.
The part of the sentence that tells who is speaking and how they said it, like said Mom or shouted the boy. It can go before or after the dialogue.
A conversation between two or more people, or the spoken words written in a story. Writers use dialogue to bring characters to life.
Maria said the pizza is amazing.
โ ๏ธ Confusing โ is Maria saying this or is the narrator describing pizza?
Maria said, "The pizza is amazing."
โ Clear โ we know exactly what Maria said
๐ก Quotation marks are like a spotlight โ they shine on the EXACT words someone speaks!
When the speaker tag comes FIRST, follow this pattern:
Speaker tag + comma + opening quote + first word capitalized + dialogue + end punctuation INSIDE quotes + closing quote
Example:
The teacher said, "Please open your books."
Dad said, "We are going to the store."
She whispered, "Don't tell anyone."
The principal announced, "There will be no school on Friday!"
๐ The comma ALWAYS goes right after the speaker tag, BEFORE the opening quotation mark.
Which sentence uses quotation marks correctly?
A) Mom said "go clean your room."
B) Mom said, "Go clean your room."
B is correct! The speaker tag has a comma, capital G, and period inside the quotation marks.
When the speaker tag comes LAST:
Opening quote + first word capitalized + dialogue + comma/? or ! INSIDE quotes + closing quote + speaker tag + period
Example:
"I can't wait for recess," said Marcus.
Three examples showing different end marks:
๐ Statement
"The movie was awesome," said Lily.
Comma replaces the period
โ Question
"Where are my shoes?" asked Dad.
Question mark stays โ no comma needed
โ Exclamation
"Watch out!" screamed the lifeguard.
Exclamation mark stays โ no comma
๐ When the speaker tag comes LAST โ commas, question marks, and exclamation points ALL go INSIDE the closing quotation mark. Only statements swap the period for a comma.
Example: Mom said, "Let's eat."
Tag LAST โ "Dialogue," + speaker tag.
Example: "Let's eat," said Mom.
Remember: End punctuation ALWAYS goes INSIDE the closing quotation mark!
Look at these two sentences. What's the SAME? What's DIFFERENT?
The coach yelled, "Hustle up!"
"Hustle up!" yelled the coach.
Sentence starter: "Both sentences have ___, but they are different because ___."
the boy said i want to go home
The boy said, "I want to go home."
can we have pizza for dinner asked my sister
"Can we have pizza for dinner?" asked my sister.
that is incredible exclaimed the scientist
"That is incredible!" exclaimed the scientist.
Rearrange this sentence so the speaker tag comes LAST:
Grandpa said, "Tell me a story."
"Tell me a story," said Grandpa.
Questions: Keep the ? ("Are you coming?" asked Sarah.)
Exclamations: Keep the ! ("Stop right there!" yelled the officer.)
๐ ALL end punctuation goes INSIDE the closing quotation mark โ always!
Add quotation marks and correct punctuation to this sentence:
the girl shouted stop running in the hallway
The girl shouted, "Stop running in the hallway!"
Rearrange this sentence so the speaker tag comes LAST:
Mr. Garcia asked where is your homework
"Where is your homework?" asked Mr. Garcia.
Write your OWN sentence where a character says something exciting. Use quotation marks and a speaker tag.
